FAQ - Windows Vista
SpecView will install and run on Windows Vista subject to the following considerations:
- Administrator Privileges are required to install SpecView, due to the new Windows Vista UAC (User Access Control), it may not be enough to just be a user with administrative privileges. The Setup program will need to be run as the Administrator.
- Due to UAC constraints, Active-X controls cannot be registered from within SpecView. This means that when restoring a configuration that uses Active-X controls, SpecView cannot register any new controls itself. Instead, use the Active-X control’s own programs/methods to achieve this.
- SpecView's help does not work (Build 826 and earlier) - Microsoft discontinued support for "WinHelp" on Vista, although this may become available in the future. We are working on translating SpecView's help into a new format which is compatible with Vista. Build 829 does have the main help file and release notes in the HTML help format, but not all instrument specific help files have been converted yet.
To use any of SpecView's existing help files, please find a copy of WINHELP32.EXE from an XP machine and put it in the SV32 folder, then run it and open the required help file.
However, SpecView's Manual, which is available as a PDF file, both on the SpecView CD and downloadable from our web site contains exactly the same information as SpecView's Help.
