Sending an SMS text message from SpecView

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

Sending a notification from SpecView when an event occurs is a common request. SpecView’s Strategy Controller has an “Action” available that runs an external command line application. There is a utility called swithmail that can be setup to send an e-mail using the “Run External Program” action.

However, please be aware that due to the mobile phone network text messages are not guaranteed to arrive in a timely manner and therefore should not be used in time critical situations.

Email to text services in the USA and Canada:

Most cell phone providers in the USA and Canada offer an e-mail to text service.

To send a SMS text message, follow the steps outlined in Setting up SwithMail (GUI) to send an Email from SpecView and replace the recipients' Email addresses with their carrier Email addresses.

For example, to send an SMS text message to a recipient with the phone number 123-456-7890 and a carrier service of Bell Canada, enter 12345678890@txt.bellmobility.ca as the recipient Email Address.

However, note that these services are only available in the USA and Canada.

In the UK the SMS/MMS protocols are different so cell phone providers in the UK don't offer this service, but the below solutions will work in the UK.

AT&T – cellnumber@txt.att.net
Cricket – cellnumber@sms.mycricket.com
Verizon – cellnumber@vtext.com
T-Mobile – cellnumber@tmomail.net
Sprint PCS - cellnumber@messaging.sprintpcs.com
Virgin Mobile – cellnumber@vmobl.com
US Cellular – cellnumber@email.uscc.net
Nextel - cellnumber@messaging.nextel.com
Boost - cellnumber@myboostmobile.com
Alltel – cellnumber@message.alltel.com

Email to text services in Canada:

Bell Canada - cellnumber@txt.bellmobility.ca
Fido - cellnumber@fido.ca
Rogers Canada - cellnumber@pcs.rogers.com
Telus - cellnumber@msg.telus.com
Virgin Mobile Canada - cellnumber@vmobile.ca
Koodo - cellnumber@koodomobile.com
Chatr - cellnumber@pcs.rogers.com
Sasktel - cellnumber@sms.Sasktel.com

Using swithmail together with a text messaging service:

It is possible to send text messages using swithmail to email an email address that will then send a text to that mobile number (such as: www.world-text.com)

It is necessary to have setup an account with www.world-text.com to send emails to a mobile number, and note that there will be a cost involved.

Using 2sms:

It is also possible to send texts directly using 2sms (www.2sms.com).

2sms has a command line interface that works well with SpecView and 2sms is fully supported on Windows 7

See the 2sms website for details.

However they have a multitude of pricing structures, see their pricing page here: http://www.2sms.com/cost.aspx

This is an example of using 2sms to send a text message using the Button/Strategy Controller action 'Run External Program':

C:\Program Files\2sms.com\Desktop SMS\desktopsms.exe /m:"%%SpecView.Time%%, Routine maintenance due: %%SpecView.MaintDateTime%%" /n:"07777123456" /s

Note, there is also a cost involved, see pricing here: https://gb.2sms.com/uk-pricing/
