Variable - Definition

Note:

In SpecView's Help the word 'variable' is used when referring to any of: a SpecView Pre-defined variable or a SpecView User Variable or an instrument parameter.

Whereas the word 'parameter' is only used when referring to instrument parameters.

 

A parameter is a specific piece of information within an instrument.

The full name (in order to be unique) is made up of two parts: <name of instrument>.<name of parameter>

Examples:

 Barrel Zone 1.Setpoint

 Furnace 3.Process Value

 

Variables may be selected and placed anywhere on a GDW, used as a Pen on a Trend chart, as a value in a Bar chart or selected to be included in a Recipe or data logging.

There are several Variable Types

The Properties of a variable can be changed.

 

When dragging variables from the Variables List onto a GDW the Options->Include Name menu can be used to specify which names to include:

 

VariablesList_IncludeName

 

For those who are familiar with the abbreviated parameter names used by the instrument's control panel SpecView also has the concept of variable Short Names. Read Parameter List
