New copies of SpecView are supplied with soft licenses as standard. Existing USB license dongles are still supported.
USB license dongles are available on request at extra cost.
There is a comparison of these types of license here.
A & B: Old style 25-pin parallel dongles which were superseded by USB dongles in 2004, but continued to be supported until 2021.
C, D & E: Safenet USB dongles that are still supported.
F: Keylok USB dongles.
The Dongle is your license. Do not lose it! The dongles can be mistaken for a memory stick and therefore should be securely attached to the computer. Dongles can only be replaced or exchanged for less than the cost of a new license if the original is returned to SpecView.
If SpecView was supplied with a USB license dongle it should be plugged into a USB port before installing SpecView.
The specification of the license is printed on a keyring label attached to the dongle along with the Serial Number.
When SpecView is started the serial number is shown on the opening 'splash' screen.
The specification of the license may be viewed at any time by clicking the Help menu and choosing Registration Info.
Click here for details on upgrading a USB license dongle.
Note, Remote computers used with SpecView's Remote option are unlicensed copies. The license on the local computer will need to have been purchased with the required number of simultaneous remote users.
Each dongle contains one license to use the software. There is no concept of a 'Site License' within SpecView.
Should there be a problem, please contact you SpecView representative.
The following table lists some messages, warnings, and errors related to USB License Dongles.
E12069: Dongle is not present, SpecView will exit.
SpecView checks for the dongle frequently while it is running. If it is not detected then it does 10 retries in quick succession - but if the dongle is still not detected then it gives this error and will exit.
If the dongle is accidentally disconnected and it is quickly reconnected it will be OK.
E12384: Warning that a SpecView Project that was last run with a license is now being run without a license:
Error message displayed is:
This error indicates that SpecView will only operate for 10 minutes in Demo Mode because the license that was previously used, which was either:
1. A USB License Dongle which is now not connected to the PC, in this case the user will need to connect the dongle, then exit SpecView and run it again.
2. A Soft license which is no longer detectable, in this case the soft license needs to be made available. If in doubt contact Technical Support.
This error used to falsely appear when a user was using Demo Mode intentionally to create a new project.
However, this issue was resolved in SpecView Build 3.1.249.
