Remote/Local Screen Sizes Differ

Previous pageReturn to chapter overviewNext page

In the case where a Remote computer's physical screen (display or monitor) is a different size (resolution) to the Local computer's physical screen (display or monitor) then it can be difficult for users to see the whole screen-layout (also know as a GD3* or page, see asterisked note below) to access buttons, etc.

To resolve this there are solutions:

Enabling scrollbars on the File->Preferences Display tab will allow 'scrolling' around the screen-layout (GDW or page).

But that is only suitable as a short-term solution, especially if using Full-Screen mode, alternatively create a set of screen-layouts that have had the objects re-sized or re-positioned to fit the different screen size. This is described here.

To do this for each screen-layout use File->Save As to save it to another name, for example, save Zone1.GD3 to Zone1_small.GD3

Then open Zone1_small.GD3 in Edit Mode and go to View->Set screen size guide and enter the width and height in pixels of the smaller screen.

Then choose View->Show screen size guide. This will show a dashed line to assist in re-positioning/re-sizing the objects as required.

Once complete, add buttons to access the new set of screen-layouts (GD3s or pages) from the first screen (File->Set As First GDW), for example, having an initial choice of buttons to select 'Big' (Local) or 'Small' (Remote) or vice versa. These then go to the appropriate set of screen-layouts.

In the Variables List there is a SpecView Variable 'RemoteMode' which is set to 'On' on on Remote.

However, due to the fact that the Strategy Controller doesn't run on the Remote it isn't possible to use this Variable to switch screens according to whether or not it is on the Local or the Remote.

(The purpose of the 'RemoteMode' variable is, for example, to only have an 'Exit SpecView' button on the Remote. Not on the Local. To do this use Position Dynamics to position the Exit button off-screen when RemoteMode=Off. Or for use with ActiveX controls.)

* Note: For users of earlier versions of SpecView the term GDW (Graphical Display Window) was used for a 'screen-layout' (or page). These are now GD3 (Graphical Display windows for Version 3).
